Way of Soaring Blades Monk
Monks of the Way of Soaring Blades train to use their extreme skill and channeled Ki to defeat foes from afar with volleys of thrown weapons. They can use thrown blades like an extension of their own bodies, hitting enemies with impossible power and accuracy and aiming them to hit multiple targets before somehow ricocheting back to their hands.
Class Features
Swift Throws
Starting when you choose this tradition at level 3, when using Martial Arts or Flurry of Blows to perform Bonus Action Attacks, these can be Thrown Weapon Attacks instead of Unarmed Attacks. These attacks count as unarmed melee attacks for the sake of all other monk features such as Stunning Strike and Ki-Empowered Strikes.
Notes:
Returning Blades
From level 6, immediately after making a Ranged Attack with a Thrown Weapon, that weapon can be returned to the Monk’s hand instantly at no cost, either through a skilled throwing causing it to spin back, using an invisibly fine thread, or perhaps by pulling it back with Ki power.
Notes:
Ki Throw
From level 11, when making a Ranged Attack with a Thrown Weapon, the Monk can spend Ki Points to impose one of the following effects:
-
Pinning: The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be pinned in place, preventing movement. Characters can spend an action to attempt a Strength saving throw to unpin them but otherwise they will be pinned until this occurs. This costs 1 Ki Point but additional Ki Points can be spent to increase the difficulty of the saving Throw by 1 per additional point spent.
-
Homing: The Thrown Weapon weaves through the air as though it is alive. This attack ignores line of sight and cannot miss but must travel a path it could physically fit through and can only travel distance equal to its range. This costs 1 Ki Point but additional Ki-Points can be spent to increase the range of this attack by 10 feet per additional point.
Notes:
Ki Blade Storm
From level 17, once per short rest, for the cost of 5 Ki Points, envelop yourself in a storm of spinning blades. This storm has a radius of 20 feet and lasts for up to 1 minute, requiring concentration. A creature takes 4d6 slashing damage when it enters the storm’s area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there. If it is an ally creature you can choose not to damage them.
