Way of the Iron Fist Monk

Monks of the Way of the Iron Fist don heavy armour and a shield before entering hand-to-hand combat. Through training with their layers of protection they learn to not allow it to slow them down and instead they harness this bulk in combination with their Ki to protect their allies and strike down their enemies.

Class Features

Weighted Training

Starting when you choose this tradition at level 3, gain light, medium, heavy armour and shield proficiency and gain the following benefits to armour and shields. Wearing armour or a shield no longer prevents you using Monk features such as Unarmoured Movement and Unarmoured Defence.

Notes:

Swift Steel

From level 6, armour and shields do not cap the AC gained from the Monk’s Dexterity Modifier. They also no longer give Disadvantage on stealth checks, and they can be equipped and unequipped instantly.

Notes:

Ki Shield

From level 11, learn to charge your shield with Ki allowing you to use the following abilities:

  • Ki Block: As a reaction when a character within 20 feet is targeted with an attack, spend Ki throw your shield to intercept the attack, increasing the target’s AC by 1 per Ki point spent and temporarily granting them the effects of your shield against the incoming attack. If the target is yourself you just gain the AC from Ki spent since you already have your shield’s effects. Costs 1 Ki point.

  • Ki Bash: As an attack action, spend Ki points to throw your shield at a target up to 20 feet away, dealing 1d6 damage per Ki point spent on a hit. If hit, the target must succeed a strength saving throw or be knocked back 5 feet and knocked prone for 1 turn.

Notes:

Iron Fist

From level 17, once per short rest, for the cost of 5 Ki Points, channel the energy of your armour into your strikes for 10 turns. This increases the damage of your unarmed strikes by half your AC rounded down.
